New Delhi, India — In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has granted Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal the liberty to approach the trial court for regular bail in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. The top court reserved its decision on Kejriwal’s plea challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and subsequent remand.
The ED has filed a chargesheet against Kejriwal and the AAP, naming the party as an accused in the case, adding a new dimension to the ongoing investigation. Kejriwal, who has been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court until June 1 to campaign in the Lok Sabha elections, is required to surrender and return to jail on June 2. The elections, spanning seven phases, conclude on June 1, with vote counting set for June 4.
Kejriwal has alleged mistreatment during his judicial custody in Tihar Jail, claiming, “There were two CCTV cameras inside my cell in Tihar and the feed was monitored by 13 officers. It was said that the CCTV feed was also provided to PMO. Modi ji was monitoring me… I do not know what grudge Modi has against me.”
He further stated, “I have to go back to jail on June 2. I will be watching the election results inside jail on June 4. If the INDIA bloc comes to power, I will be back on June 5,” addressing AAP party councillors last week.
The Supreme Court’s interim relief allows Kejriwal to actively participate in the crucial final phase of the Lok Sabha elections, a period critical for his party’s campaigning efforts. The reserved order on his arrest plea will determine the next legal steps in the high-profile case.
