Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Challenging Election of Jailed Preacher Amritpal Singh as MP from Khadoor Sahib

On Friday, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a plea challenging the election of jailed radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh as a Member of Parliament from Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency. The plea was brought before a bench comprising Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan.

The petitioner, who appeared in-person, argued that Amritpal Singh should be disqualified under Article 84 of the Constitution, which outlines the qualifications required for membership in Parliament. The petitioner claimed that Singh had publicly expressed that he did not owe allegiance to the Constitution of India, thereby disqualifying him from being elected to Parliament.

However, the bench advised the petitioner to file an election petition, noting that the petitioner was not a voter in the Khadoor Sahib constituency and therefore had no standing in the matter. The bench further emphasized that there are specific procedures and provisions outlined in the Representation of the People Act to address such concerns.

The Supreme Court concluded the hearing by stating, “Thank you. Dismissed,” thereby refusing to entertain the petition.

Amritpal Singh, who leads the ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, is currently incarcerated in Assam’s Dibrugarh district under charges related to the National Security Act. Despite his imprisonment, Singh was granted parole on July 5 to take his oath as a Member of Parliament.
