In a significant development, the Supreme Court has dismissed the bail plea of former Delhi minister Satyendra Jain and directed him to surrender without delay in connection with a money laundering case. Jain, who had been on interim medical bail since May 26 last year, faced allegations of acquiring disproportionate assets amounting to ₹1.47 crore during his tenure as minister from February 2015 to May 2017.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), investigating the case, had attached alleged proceeds of crime worth ₹4.60 crore, linking Jain to three companies through his wife, Poonam Jain. Despite arguments from Jain’s counsel citing his health condition, the bench of justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal maintained its order, dismissing the bail plea and ordering immediate surrender.
Jain’s legal team, led by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, highlighted the lack of control over the companies in question. However, the ED contended that Jain exerted influence through his wife’s directorship and the involvement of two other accused individuals.
The former minister had previously obtained medical bail after a fall in jail resulting in a spinal injury. However, with the latest court ruling, he is now required to surrender in connection with the ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering activities.
The dismissal of Jain’s bail plea marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the case, underlining the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency in matters of financial impropriety.
