The Supreme Court of India on Thursday issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and Ghaziabad businessman Satyendra Tyagi in connection with a cheating case involving celebrated Bollywood choreographer and director Remo D’Souza. The Court, hearing an appeal by D’Souza, sought responses from both parties and set November 22 as the date for further proceedings.
The controversy began in 2016, when an FIR was lodged by Satyendra Tyagi, alleging that D’Souza persuaded him to invest ₹5 crore in an upcoming film titled Amar Must Die. Tyagi claimed D’Souza promised to double his investment after the film’s release, but the commitment was not honored.
The FIR, filed under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 386 (extortion) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), also accused D’Souza of threatening Tyagi through underworld don Prasad Pujari when Tyagi demanded the return of his money.
Born Ramesh Gopi Nair, D’Souza has had a storied career spanning over 25 years. Renowned for choreographing more than 100 Bollywood films, his innovative contributions have earned him widespread acclaim. As a director, D’Souza redefined the dance film genre with hits like ABCD: Any Body Can Dance, ABCD 2, and Street Dancer 3D.
The Supreme Court has allowed dasti (personal) service of notices and has scheduled the next hearing for November 22, 2024. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for both D’Souza’s career and the entertainment industry’s broader financial practices.
