Supreme Court Legal Services Committee Advances Digitalization in Legal Aid

The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) recently convened a workshop aimed at panel lawyers, with a primary focus on embracing digitalization in legal aid and elevating the quality of legal assistance provided. Chaired by Hon’ble Mr. Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Chairman of the SCLSC, the workshop served as a platform to identify key legal aid issues and explore effective means to address them promptly.

Justice Gavai, in his capacity as Executive Chairman of the SCLSC, underscored the significance of the workshop, emphasizing the imminent establishment of a feedback mechanism to enhance the committee’s functioning. He highlighted the pivotal role played by Advocates on Record, describing them as the backbone of the SCLSC, and stressed the importance of facilitating interaction between legal aid counsels and jail inmates through video conferencing.

Delving into the principles of Nyaya and Niti, Justice Gavai drew special reference to the work of Sh. Amartya Sen, enriching the discourse with philosophical insights. The workshop, tailored for lawyers associated with the SCLSC, aimed to equip them with proficiency in the committee’s digital initiatives and foster discussions on enhancing the broader framework of quality legal aid.

During the event, Justice Gavai invoked Justice Vivian Bose’s words, highlighting the inclusive nature of the Indian Constitution, which serves the interests of all citizens, regardless of their background or occupation.

The workshop provided panel lawyers of the SCLSC with valuable insights into integrating digital tools into their practice, thereby augmenting efficiency and expanding the reach of legal services. Ms. Vibha Datta Makhija delivered the welcome address, tracing the historic evolution of the SCLSC. The sessions on digital initiatives overview and the quality of legal aid were conducted by Mr. Yajuvender Singh, Secretary of the SCLSC, and Ms. Kiran Suri, Senior Advocate, respectively.

The active participation of Advocates on Record marked a significant milestone in the SCLSC’s journey toward modernizing legal aid services. The workshop reflects the committee’s commitment to ensuring that legal aid services remain resilient, responsive, and attuned to the needs of the community.
