In a decisive intervention to address the acute water crisis in Delhi, the Supreme Court on June 6 mandated Himachal Pradesh to release 137 cusecs of surplus water to assist the capital city. This directive aims to mitigate the severe water shortage affecting millions of Delhi residents.
The Supreme Court’s order also directed Haryana to ensure the uninterrupted flow of this surplus water from Hathnikund to Wazirabad in Delhi. The court emphasized the necessity for seamless cooperation between the states to address the pressing water scarcity issue.
According to the court’s instructions, Himachal Pradesh is required to release the surplus water on June 7, following prior notification to Haryana. This measure is expected to provide immediate relief to Delhi’s water supply system, which has been struggling to meet the demands of its population.
Furthermore, the apex court has tasked the Upper Yamuna River Board with the responsibility of measuring the water released by Himachal Pradesh at Hathnikund. This step is crucial for ensuring accountability and precise monitoring of the water flow to Delhi.
In addition to these directives, the Supreme Court underscored the importance of efficient water management within Delhi. The court explicitly instructed the Delhi government to prevent any wastage of the precious resource and demanded a status report by June 10 to review the effectiveness of the measures implemented.
This ruling comes at a critical juncture, as Delhi grapples with a severe water shortage exacerbated by rising summer temperatures and increasing demand. The Supreme Court’s intervention highlights the urgency of inter-state collaboration in managing and distributing water resources equitably.
