On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India sought responses from the 2017 Unnao rape survivor and her family regarding the Centre’s plea to withdraw their CRPF security cover, which was initially granted by the court in 2019. The security was provided following the serious threats faced by the survivor after the conviction of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP leader, who is currently serving a life sentence for the kidnapping and rape of the minor.
A bench comprising Justice Bela M. Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma acknowledged the Centre’s request, which cited a threat analysis that indicated a reduced level of danger. The Centre suggested that the security could now be handled by the local police, instead of the CRPF.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court emphasized the necessity of ensuring the survivor’s safety, as she and her family have relocated to Delhi following the court’s order to transfer all related cases from Lucknow to Delhi. The transfer aimed to facilitate a swift trial.
In 2019, the Supreme Court directed the Uttar Pradesh government to provide an interim compensation of Rs. 25 lakh to the survivor. Meanwhile, Sengar has appealed to the Delhi High Court to overturn his conviction and life imprisonment, as well as the 10-year prison sentence handed down for his role in the custodial death of the survivor’s father in 2018.
The Supreme Court’s next step will depend on the responses from the survivor and her family, as the court continues to review the security concerns surrounding this high-profile case.
