Supreme Court Slams “Selective Amnesia” on Forests, Calls for Ecocentric Approach

The Supreme Court of India has issued a strong rebuke to the undervaluing of forests, calling human treatment of these vital ecosystems a case of “selective amnesia.” The court’s remarks came during a verdict overturning a Telangana High Court decision that declared over 100 acres of forest land as private property.

Court Decries “Gifting Away” Forest Land

The verdict not only reversed the High Court’s decision but also criticized it for essentially “graciously gifting” the land to a private individual who couldn’t establish ownership rights. The court further condemned state officials for neglecting their responsibility to protect forest areas.

Forests: The Lungs of Our Planet

A two-judge bench led by Justices M.M. Sundresh and S.V.N. Bhatti highlighted the crucial role forests play in sustaining life on Earth. They stated, “Human beings indulge themselves in selective amnesia when it comes to fathom the significance of forests.” The court emphasized that forests act as the “lungs” of the planet, providing oxygen and maintaining a healthy environment for all living creatures.

Beyond Utility: The Intrinsic Value of Forests

The judges went beyond utilitarian arguments, suggesting that understanding human history requires “the prism of the environment, the forest in particular.” They described the “spirit of the forest” as a vital element of the Earth itself. The verdict lamented how humanity continues to destroy these irreplaceable resources, despite their “unblemished, selfless & motherly service.” The court warned of the devastating consequences of deforestation, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

A Shift in Perspective: From Human-Centric to Eco-Centric

The Supreme Court called for a fundamental change in human behavior, urging a shift from an “anthropocentric approach” to an “ecocentric approach.” This transition would require humans to act as stewards of the Earth, prioritizing the well-being of the entire ecosystem. The verdict underscores the need for sustainable living practices and respect for the inherent rights of natural elements like rivers, mountains, and air.

The court’s verdict serves as a wake-up call, urging humanity to acknowledge the critical role of forests and commit to their preservation. Only by adopting an ecocentric approach can we ensure a healthy planet for ourselves and future generations.
