The Supreme Court of India has taken a stern stance against Patanjali Ayurved, ordering co-founder Baba Ramdev and Managing Director Acharya Balakrishna to personally appear in a hearing regarding misleading advertisements promoting medicinal cures. This move comes after the apex court had previously issued a Contempt notice when Patanjali Ayurved continued to publish misleading ads despite warnings from the court.
During the resumed hearing, a bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Ahsanuddin Amanullah expressed deep concern over the ongoing dissemination of misleading advertisements by Patanjali Ayurved. Justice Amanullah emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the entire country was being misled by these advertisements.
The bench issued a show cause contempt notice to the company and its MD Acharya Balakrishna, rebuking them for disregarding previous warnings from the court. Justice Amanullah, in particular, expressed dismay at the audacity of Patanjali Ayurved to continue running such ads even after the court’s orders.
The court criticized the Centre for its failure to take action against Patanjali Ayurved despite the clear violation of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, which prohibits misleading advertisements related to medicinal cures. The bench questioned why action had not been taken by the Centre for over two years since the advertisements were first flagged.
The ongoing contempt proceedings highlight the seriousness with which the Supreme Court views the issue of misleading advertisements, especially in the context of medicinal products. The court’s insistence on personal appearances by Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for accountability in addressing such violations.
As the hearing continues, all eyes are on the Supreme Court to see how it will further address the issue of misleading advertisements and ensure compliance with regulations aimed at protecting consumers from false or deceptive claims regarding medicinal products.
