The Supreme Court is set to hear the pleas filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren challenging their arrests by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Scheduled for Monday, both petitions will be listed before the bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta, marking a significant moment in the legal battle against their respective arrests.
Arvind Kejriwal’s plea revolves around contesting the April 9 judgment of the Delhi High Court, which dismissed his writ petition challenging his arrest by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy. The Aam Aadmi Party leader has been in custody since his arrest on March 21, with both the ED and Kejriwal having submitted their respective affidavits in the matter.
Similarly, Hemant Soren has approached the Supreme Court seeking relief against his arrest, with senior advocate Kapil Sibal representing him. Soren’s petition stems from the Jharkhand High Court’s reserved decision on his plea challenging his arrest, highlighting the urgency of an immediate hearing due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Soren, who has termed his arrest as illegal and malafide, has also sought interim bail pending the final judgment.
The legal saga surrounding Kejriwal and Soren’s arrests has captured widespread attention, with both cases raising questions about the legality and propriety of the ED’s actions. While Kejriwal’s arrest is linked to allegations related to the Delhi excise policy, Soren’s arrest is rooted in a land scam case. The Supreme Court’s forthcoming hearing holds significance in determining the course of justice for both individuals amidst the political backdrop of the ongoing elections.
As the nation awaits the outcome of these hearings, the spotlight remains on the Supreme Court’s role in upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law. The decisions rendered in these cases will not only have implications for Kejriwal and Soren but also for the broader discourse on the accountability of public officials and the functioning of investigative agencies like the ED.
In the midst of media speculation and legal maneuvering, the Supreme Court’s intervention is poised to provide clarity and direction in these high-profile cases, reaffirming its pivotal role in safeguarding the rights and liberties of individuals within the democratic framework of the country.
