The Supreme Court is set to address a plea concerning the ongoing forest fires in Uttarakhand on May 8th, highlighting the pressing need for immediate action to mitigate the environmental and ecological damage caused by these blazes. An advocate, representing the case, informed the bench that nearly 44% of forests in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand are currently burning, with a staggering 90% of these fires being man-made.
The counsel emphasized the severity of the situation, describing it as a concerning influx of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The alarming statistics underscore the urgency of addressing the issue and implementing effective measures to combat forest fires.
The bench, in response to the advocate’s statements, scheduled the matter for further hearing on May 8th, allowing time for additional submissions and updates on the status of the fires. Additionally, the counsel representing Uttarakhand sought permission to submit a status report detailing the current situation.
Forest fires in Uttarakhand have been a recurring problem, posing a significant threat to the environment, wildlife, and local communities. Pine trees, which are highly flammable, contribute to the rapid spread of fires, especially during the summer months.
The ongoing petition, initiated by advocate Rituparn Uniyal, calls for urgent interventions to safeguard forests, wildlife, and biodiversity from the devastating impact of wildfires. It urges the Centre, the Uttarakhand government, and forest authorities to implement pre-fire arrangements and proactive measures to prevent and manage forest fires effectively.
The plea emphasizes the critical importance of forests and wildlife in sustaining human life and maintaining ecological balance. Forests serve as vital natural resources, contributing to the economic, social, and environmental well-being of the region.
As the Supreme Court prepares to address this urgent matter, stakeholders and authorities are called upon to collaborate and take decisive action to protect Uttarakhand’s forests and mitigate the adverse effects of forest fires on the environment and local communities.
