New Delhi, India — On Friday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal appeared at Delhi’s Tis Hazari Court to record her statement regarding an alleged assault by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s personal assistant, Bibhav Kumar. The incident reportedly took place at the Chief Minister’s residence three days prior.
Maliwal, who had been incommunicado for two days following the alleged assault, filed a complaint on Thursday and addressed the incident publicly for the first time. “What happened to me was very bad. I have given my statement to the police on the incident that happened to me. I hope that appropriate action will be taken. The last few days have been very difficult for me. I thank those who prayed for me,” Maliwal wrote on social media platform X.
In her statement, she detailed the assault, claiming Bibhav Kumar slapped, kicked, beat her with a stick, and punched her in the stomach and chest. A medical examination revealed internal injuries to her face. Maliwal also alleged that Chief Minister Kejriwal was present at the residence during the incident.
Swati Maliwal further addressed those who doubted her motives, saying, “Those who tried to assassinate my character, said she was doing it on the instructions of the other party, may God keep them happy too.”
Maliwal’s statement will be recorded under Section 164 before a Magistrate, a process that ensures her testimony is documented formally and can be used in court proceedings.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken an active interest in the case, summoning Bibhav Kumar to appear at their office. Despite being summoned for May 17 at 11 am, Bibhav Kumar did not present himself. NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma addressed the media on Friday, stating that if Bibhav did not appear by Saturday, the NCW would visit his residence. When NCW sent a notice to Bibhav, his wife refused to accept it physically, so the notice was pasted on his door, according to Sharma.
Bibhav Kumar was reportedly seen at Lucknow airport on Thursday alongside Kejriwal and AAP leader Sanjay Singh, who were in Lucknow for unspecified reasons. On Friday, Kejriwal was in Punjab for election campaigning, adding to the uncertainty of Bibhav Kumar’s whereabouts.
This incident and its aftermath have significant implications for the Aam Aadmi Party and its leadership. The allegations against Bibhav Kumar, coupled with the involvement of the Chief Minister, add a layer of complexity to the political landscape as the party navigates internal and external pressures. The legal proceedings and investigations by the NCW will be closely monitored, as they may impact public perception and the political fortunes of those involved.
As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Swati Maliwal and holding the responsible parties accountable, while the political ramifications continue to resonate within the AAP and beyond.
