A Thane court has convicted three individuals for assaulting a police constable while he was performing his official duties in December 2020. The court sentenced the convicts to four days of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on each. The incident occurred when police constable Mitesh Katkar requested the driver of a vehicle to move it, as it was obstructing traffic at a signal in the Anandnagar area of Thane.
The convicts, identified as Aditya Lakshman Murudkar, Nilesh Rupesh Samant, and Guruprit Deepakram, attacked the constable in retaliation. The Additional Sessions Court judge G T Pawar ruled that the act of assaulting a public servant while he was discharging his duty underscored the gravity of the offense. The judge highlighted the importance of protecting law enforcement officers from such assaults to ensure they can perform their duties without fear of harm.
The three accused were each fined ₹5,000, with an additional 15-day imprisonment in case of default. However, a fourth accused, Sushant Sharad Matvankar, was acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence linking him to the incident.
The court order was passed on October 16, and the details were made available on Saturday, October 21.
In his ruling, Judge Pawar emphasized that this case serves as a reminder of the importance of rigorous enforcement of laws designed to protect public servants, enabling them to execute their duties effectively and without fear of retribution.
The judgment reflects the judiciary’s stance on ensuring that attacks on police and other public servants are not taken lightly, sending a clear message to deter future incidents of similar nature.
