Unveiling the Untold Connection: The Black Panther–Dalit Panther Alliance for Social Justice

The organic bond between the Black Panther Party in the United States and the Dalit Panther movement in India, rooted in the shared experiences of oppression and struggle against systemic discrimination, serves as a poignant reminder of the global solidarity among marginalized communities striving for social justice.

During his time at Columbia University in New York, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of India’s Constitution and a champion of Dalit rights, bore witness to the persistent racial inequality faced by African Americans. The resonance between their struggles and those of the Dalits in India inspired Dr. Ambedkar to advocate for education, organization, and agitation as essential tools for empowerment.

Drawing inspiration from W.E.B. Du Bois and the civil rights movements in the United States, Dr. Ambedkar envisioned a parallel advocacy for the rights of Dalits on the global stage. His correspondence with Du Bois and his call for a united front against racism underscored the transcontinental solidarity between oppressed communities.

In the 1970s, the radical Dalit upsurge gave rise to the Dalit Panthers, a movement that consciously adopted the name and ethos of the Black Panther Party. This symbolic gesture represented a convergence of struggles against caste oppression and racial discrimination, echoing the spirit of resistance and self-defense embodied by the Black Panthers.

The Black Panther Party, born out of the injustices faced by African Americans in the 1960s, galvanized a generation of activists to confront police brutality, economic inequality, and systemic racism. Similarly, the Dalit Panthers in India sought to challenge the entrenched caste hierarchy and advocate for social and economic justice for Dalits.

The birthplace of the Black Panther movement in Oakland, California, became a beacon of hope for marginalized communities worldwide, igniting a flame of resistance against oppression and injustice. The legacy of the Black Panthers continues to inspire movements for social justice and equity across the globe, serving as a testament to the enduring power of collective action and solidarity.

As we reflect on the intertwined histories of the Black Panther–Dalit Panther connection, we reaffirm our commitment to dismantling structures of oppression and advancing the cause of equality for all. In the spirit of solidarity, we stand united against injustice, forging alliances across borders to create a more just and equitable world.
